Movetru Secures £1.2M Pre-Seed to Launch AI Wearables for Sports Injury Prevention
Sports tech startup Movetru has closed a £1.2 million (≈ €1.4 million / US$1.6 million) pre-seed funding round as it prepares to launch across Europe with its AI-powered wearable device for movement analysis and injury prevention.
The round was led by UK venture capital firm Two Magnolias, with support from a syndicate including IAG Capital, HBAN, Angel Academe, AwakenAngels, and individual angel investors with expertise in sports medicine and biomechanics such as Dr. Phil Graham-Smith, Dr. Mark Batt, and Jeff Mostyn.
Founded in 2020 by Naomi McGregor, Movetru was inspired by her own ballet injury at age 14 that went undiagnosed for years. Combining that experience with her academic background in product design engineering, she developed a wearable sensor system and app designed to deliver real-time biomechanical insights.
The product uses six 3D-printed wearable sensors that attach to the lower body, capturing data on joint angles, ground reaction forces, and other movement dynamics. The data is analysed through AI to generate a “movement score” along with actionable recommendations. Initially focused on detailed engineering and sports science outputs, Movetru has since refined its platform to deliver more user-friendly automatic screenings, making the insights easier for coaches and practitioners to apply.
The funding will enable Movetru to double its workforce and move forward with commercialization, supporting a broader rollout to sports clubs, coaches, and clinics across Europe. The company also intends to use the investment to scale marketing, expand production, and further enhance its sensor and software platform.
Movetru is already gaining traction with early adopters. Its technology is being used by professional and amateur sports organisations in the UK and Ireland, including the Belfast Giants ice hockey team, and has engaged with Premier League football clubs. The wearables are being deployed for both injury prevention and rehabilitation, particularly for conditions such as ACL, Achilles, and hamstring injuries.
In addition to venture backing, Movetru has benefited from grant funding, including a £500,000 Innovate UK Smart Grant that supported research and development into ACL injury prevention and rehabilitation. These resources have allowed the company to refine its technology and build scientific credibility in the sports medicine community.
With its new capital raise, Movetru is poised to scale its technology, accelerate its European expansion, and prepare for entry into the U.S. market. The company’s vision is to make advanced biomechanics insights accessible outside of elite laboratories, allowing athletes, coaches, and clinicians to gain practical, field-ready analysis that can reduce injuries and improve performance.
As a female-founded startup in the sports technology sector, Movetru’s fundraising achievement also highlights growing recognition of diverse leadership in an industry that has historically seen limited representation. With strong investor backing, growing adoption, and a clear focus on applying AI and biomechanics to sports health, Movetru is entering a pivotal stage in its mission to transform injury prevention and athlete care.
